Decanter World Wine Awards and Croatian Wines 2020

Croatia is among the most conveniently located countries in the world. It lies across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. This makes it rich in different varieties of grapes, and this brings in its winemaking history. There are thousands of wines to discover.

According to a Decanter Expert’s Choice piece of writing (written by Caroline Gilby MW, the joint DWWA Regional Chair with Beth Willard for North, Central, and Eastern Europe), Croatia is a land with a rich wine history. The chair further stated that its regions, such as the Stari Grad plain on Hvar Island, have been listed by UNESCO as world heritage. It is believed as being the largest vineyard that has been continually cultivated.

She further explains how the landscape varies from the rolling wooded hills and beautiful hilltop Istria villages to the exciting Slavonian continental landscape. Visitors get to see the sun-lit, rocky and steep Dalmatian vineyards. According to this piece, these islands and landscapes couldn’t support anything more than grapevines. And the soil does even better at it.

If you are interested in discovering Croatian wine, this article covers over 95+ points sparking, red, and white wines covered in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. They are worth exploring.
